thank you for becoming a member! we want to introduce you to a few of our many Members: **Michael is a teacher-trainer with ACLE (Associazione Culturale Linguistica Educational), writer & editor living in rome, italy. Over the last twenty years, he has lived in Russia, Turkey, Ethiopia & Indonesia & has extensively traveled the globe. His professional interests include humanistic education, action research & educational coaching, while his passions include archaeology & history. **javiera is a high school senior from Colegio Almendral (Santiago, chile). proud of her Mapuche Heritage (see: berkleycenter.georgetown.edu/posts/preserving-mapuche-culture-in-a-globalized-world), she also is an avid reader & youth excursion leader. Recently, she was named a cultural ambassador to Mexico and pursued a learning exchange with the maya & nahual indigenous cultures.**Chad, a college professor in the Yosemite Community College District, received a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and has taught high school, college and graduate school students. a former university dean, high school principal, Peace corps volunteer & NEH Grant Director (See: www.neh.gov/files/edu_hicc_modesto_ogc), he is also an academic editor & founded "the Repast Project" in California. he says: "We have a duty to be well-read & well-spoken & a call to serve others."**Megan is a High School student who loves soccer, water polo, wake-boarding, music & photography. SHe says she "loves writing because whenever you write, it can be compared to a journey, you start with nothing & sometimes you don’t really know where you would like to go." **javiera is a high school student at the colegio teresiano enrique de osso (www.colegioteo.cl/)in Latin America. She attended the Fourth World Learning Exchange in Northern California (see: www.fourthworldcooperative.org/learning-exchanges/) calling it "a gift for me." She explains: "One of my interests is science, so I’m constantly asking questions to either understand or learn new things." **Marianela, who spent her childhood under dictatorship and still wonders how it fully affected her, immigrated twenty years ago to the United States with her husband. She has worked for general electric & a Spanish-language publication (Now: Hoy - Chicago Tribune) & currently enjoys Raising three children, camping & gardening when not working as a photography. **Vicente is a Latino honors student at Sonora High School (california). he plays the saxophone, enjoys reading & soccer & hopes to be an author one day. "I believe," he says, "that the cooperative Is a place to enrich one's experiences & learn new perspectives that transcend monocultures." **Liberty is a talented singer & student in Northern California who enjoys creative writing, quilting, painting, traveling, cooking & sports when not playing the piano, guitar or ukulele. **Addie is considered going into journalism, publishing & travel writing. Currently a student, she loves to read & enjoys research; she recently participated in a learning exchange so as to: "improve my skills in writing & literature & further my knowledge in other arts as well."**Conrad & Valentina are siblings, attending Curtis Creek School District together in Rural California. Birds of a Feather Day Camp (see: www.fourthworldcooperative.org/learning-exchanges/) participants, He plays drums, soccer & basketball & is most happy with his family & puppy Chloe. she wants to be a veterinarian & teacher & defines happiness as "Rainbows, dogs, Blue Sky & singing in the shower."

MISSION

Fourth World--a non-partisan, international non-profit dedicated to defending the creative arts-- offers its members workshops,

mealtime conversations and guided (inter)national travel, as well as regular opportunities for 'Authorial Rights' distribution with our Cooperative publishing house.

Fourth World's mission is to foster meaningful and productive conversations and to confront the decline of reading and writing habits in our technology-saturated world.

Fourth World derives purpose from its members: (1) readers, writers and artists; (2) students and teachers; (3) civic and community leaders; and(4) all those who love travel, conversations and books.

OUR WORK

In order to confront these sudden declinesin reading and writing habits—and so as to provide time and space in our workaday world for collective human reflection—we sponsor The Repast Project: Mealtime Conversationsand Learning Exchanges and invite teachers and students, artists and community and civic leaders to participate. With these efforts, we hope future generations will still sit and talk, respectfully, about big questions and books and ideas.

Currently, free mealtime conversations (supported by a community college and hosted at local restaurants) are being provided for over 100 students, teachers and community leaders who are asked only to sit for several hours and talk about contemporary issues such as: Artificial Intelligence; Borders, Money and Citizenship; The Means and Ends of Public Education; and The Politics of “We the People.”

Moreover, our inaugural exchange—Struggle: Foundations of Same and Other—just concluded this summer. Over five days, cooperative members from the indigenous Mapuche, Italy, the United States, Mexico and Chile all gathered (having received full travel-meal-and-accommodation scholarships) at a small ranch in the Sierra Nevada foothills.

We also support group book discussions in the homes of members and sponsor occasional BIRDS OF A FEATHER DAY CAMPS for school children.

Finally, in order to assure we continue to foster lively and productive interactions across cultures and generations, members will send out to our membership the first issue of The Fourth World Quarterly (Winter 2017)--a thematically organized literary journal dedicated to the defense of liberal arts. This quarterly can be printed for use by all readers and teachers, home-schoolers, artists and writers, families and civil leaders and is certainly for pleasure. But it is also intended to be a conversation starter formeaningful encounters at everyday meals, in classrooms and at other community gatherings.

We look forward to future Mealtime Conversations, Birds of A Feather Day Camps and the next Learning Exchanges--in the American Southwest (Nov. 2017: “Sovereignty and Crossing the Line”) and Rome (Summer 2018: “Landscape and Memory: History’s Imagination”)--as well as the publication of our quarterly, several books and various creative projects this year.
